Sports Medicine Externship

The externship provides clinical training in pediatric psychology, sport psychology, pain management and behavioral sleep medicine. Externs will conduct intakes and provide consultation and short-term therapy. There is the possibility to earn supervised hours required for becoming a Certified Mental Performance Consultant^® (CMPC).

Potential experiences are as follows:

• Outpatient psychotherapy with children, adolescents, young adults and families - typical caseload 4-6 weekly patients. Common referral issues include difficulty adjusting to sports-related injury, adherence to medical/physical therapy regimen, chronic pain, sleep disturbances, anxiety and depression.
• Consultation, education and counseling with children/adolescents who are undergoing or have undergone surgery for a sports-related injury.
• Didactics and research opportunities are available including weekly research meetings, seminars on common sports-related injuries, and discussing pertinent research regarding psychosocial impact of sports injuries. Opportunities for outreach may also be available. Opportunities for research, didactics and outreach depend on days of week of externship and could also include (a) extern didactics/DEI trainings, (b) multidisciplinary sports medicine team meetings, (c) clinical research meetings, (d) psychiatry grand rounds, and (e) pediatric grand rounds.
