This externship is ideally suited for advanced practicum students seeking further training in outpatient psychology from early childhood to adolescence. The extern will spend one day each per week providing outpatient services for youth with disordered eating and Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Program at Children’s National Hospital under the direct clinical supervision of Sarah Hornack, Ph.D., and Mi-Young Ryee, Ph.D., respectively.
About the Externship
The Child and Adolescent Anxiety Disorders Program at Children's National Hospital provides care to children and adolescents with anxiety, and their families. The majority of youth treated are school-aged children (5-18 years), though younger children are sometimes seen as well. Externs will gain experience in assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders in children and adolescents and also participate in group therapy. Experience working with children and adolescents with medical illness may be a possibility as well. In addition to formal in-person supervision, opportunities for didactics include psychiatry grand rounds, clinical seminars and case conferences within the hospital (depending on the day of the externship).
The child and adolescent eating disorders rotation involves outpatient evaluation and psychotherapy for youth presenting with binge eating disorder, bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa. The extern will gain experience with delivery of family-based treatment (FBT) and enhanced cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-E) for eating disorders. Externs will coordinate care with clinicians of other disciplines, including psychiatrists, adolescent medicine physicians and dietitians. There may also be opportunities to co-lead groups.
