Understanding Single Ventricle Defects
A single ventricle defect is a condition in which a baby’s heart is born with only one ventricle that is large enough – or strong enough – to pump effectively. Normally, a baby is born with two ventricles or pumping chambers: one that is responsible for pumping blood to the lungs and one that is responsible for pumping blood to the body. In the case of a single ventricle defect, either the left or the right ventricle can be underdeveloped, so we need to reroute the way your baby’s blood flows. With this new blood flow, one ventricle is able to do the job of two ventricles.
Most children with single ventricle heart disease need a series of three operations that take place in the first few years of life.
These three surgeries, also known as staged reconstruction, are:
- The Norwood or Hybrid procedure (Stage I)
- The Glenn (Stage II)
- The Fontan (Stage III)
