How to Apply
Appointments to Residency Training
Residents are appointed to Children's National Hospital on a yearly basis. It is expected that all pediatric residents will remain for the full three years to complete their training, except for those residents in the combined Child Neurology and Pediatrics-Medical Genetics tracks.
First Year Positions
All applications for the 40 first-year positions are reviewed through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS). Applicants should submit a personal statement, curriculum vitae, photograph, medical school transcript, dean’s letter, three letters of recommendation and USMLE scores through ERAS.
First-year positions at Children's National are selected through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Each track within the Pediatric Residency Program has separate NRMP program codes. Applicants are encouraged to apply to as many tracks as interests them.
Applicants must be from a medical school approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) of the Association of American Medical Colleges and the American Medical Association or the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) of the American Osteopathic Association. Applications from qualified graduates of foreign medical schools with proper credentialing (ECFMG certification and passing USLME scores) also will be considered. Children's National sponsors J-1 and H-1B visas.
Pediatrics-Child Neurology Track (5-years Categorical)
Four positions in each entering intern class have been designated for the combined Pediatrics-Child Neurology Pathway. This pathway consists of five continuous years of training combining two years of Pediatrics residency training with three years of Neurology fellowship training, all through Children's National. Applications for this pathway will be reviewed by both the Pediatric Residency Program and the Child Neurology department.
Pediatrics-Medical Genetics Track (4-years)
Applications for this highly competitive four-year residency training program in Pediatrics and Medical Genetics will be reviewed through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) at both Children’s National and the National Institutes of Health. Interested students should apply to this program in duplicate through ERAS: (1) the Pediatrics-Medical Genetics track of the pediatric residency program at Children’s National and (2) the Combined Pediatrics/Medical Genetics Residency Program at the NIH.
Second and Third Year Positions
When openings are present, applications for residency positions at the second or third year of training will be considered. Qualified applicants must be currently enrolled and in good standing at an ACGME-accredited pediatric residency training program to be considered. At this time, there are no openings for the pediatric residency program at Children's National.
