Starting Life with a Healthy Support System
Providers in our Early Childhood Behavioral Health Program help families who require mental healthcare for their children, sharing solutions from when they are born to age 6.
The Early Childhood Behavioral Health Program at Children's National Hospital provides high-quality behavioral healthcare to young children from birth to age 6. We support early identification and intervention for behavioral and mental health needs to allow children to meet their full potential.
Our team has expertise in treating young children who are experiencing:
- Behavior challenges
- Mood and anxiety disorders
- Developmental delays
- Challenges with daily living skills (e.g. potty training/toileting, sleep, feeding)
We never lose sight of the awesome responsibility that we have in helping a child with mental healthcare at the earliest stages of their lives, while supporting their families through the development of strong, trusting relationships.
Choosing Children's National for Early Childhood Behavioral Healthcare
Our clinic has been providing care for over 20 years, making it one of the most experienced early childhood behavioral care clinics in the region.
Our team is trained in treatment approaches that are supported by the latest research and we strongly value multiculturalism and diversity in our work with families. Our providers engage in ongoing professional development and cross-discipline collaborations to continually cultivate their skills. We are also highly committed to training the next generation of early childhood clinicians.
We work with related care programs including primary care, occupational therapy, speech therapy, neurodevelopmental pediatrics, the Child Development Program, the Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders and medical subspecialties to provide your child with integrated care for all of their needs.
We have established relationships with other community-based partners and care coordination services to help families connect to outside services if needed. Our care coordinator also coordinates care for D.C. Mental Health Access in Pediatrics and several of our team members are affiliated with the Child Health Advocacy Institute at Children's National, which is focused on building relationships in the community.
Our team members are certified to provide a high level of care across a broad variety of assessment and treatment approaches specifically aimed at children in early childhood. We are currently using the following treatments when helping children in our care:
- Therapeutic approaches supported by research that shows their effectiveness, including:
- Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
- Child-Parent Psychotherapy (CPP)
- Applied Behavior Analysis-informed treatment (ABA)
