The ADHD & Learning Differences Program at Children’s National Hospital is a specialized program dedicated to providing high quality services for children, adolescents and families, engaging in innovative interdisciplinary research and training, and working with school partners and community-based organizations to improve care for youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and learning differences.

Choosing Children's National for ADHD Care

We improve the lives of children, adolescents and families struggling with ADHD and learning challenges by:

  • Providing comprehensive, personalized assessment and treatment for ADHD, learning and behavior challenges
  • Advancing our knowledge and developing more effective assessment and treatment services for children, families and schools working with ADHD and learning differences
  • Sharing knowledge with students, families and professionals in education, mental health and primary care, as well as the community

In partnership with local schools, we are passionate about co-creating novel solutions to improve care and school experiences for students, educators and families working with ADHD and learning differences. We also often provide training, professional development and workshops to educators, school mental health providers and parents.

We collaborate with other programs at Children's National, including Psychology and Behavioral HealthPsychiatry and Behavioral SciencesNeurodevelopmental Pediatrics and Neuropsychology.

Our Services

The ADHD & Learning Differences team in collaboration with the HALP Clinic, provides a comprehensive range of programs and services in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. Families and schools can also access the latest advances in treatment for ADHD and learning differences by participating in one of the ongoing research programs.

We offer:

  • Evidence-based diagnostic evaluations and assessment of ADHD, attention, learning challenges and/or behavioral concerns for children and adolescents. 
  • Parenting interventions including individual and group-based therapy programs to empower parents to effectively manage a child’s attention and behavior.
  • Adolescent education support for youth ages 11 to 18 years old (middle and high school) to achieve success in school by improving organization, time management and homework performance.
  • Family therapy with parents/caregivers and youth to receive individualized training to manage ADHD and/or behavior concerns. 
  • Group therapy for children and adolescents to build skills and practice with their same age peers.
  • Frustration management to promote effective coping with frustration and negative emotions for children ages 8 to 11 years old.

Defining Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

This neurodevelopmental disorder makes it difficult to pay attention, keep still and think before acting. ADHD is the most common mental health problem of childhood, affecting 5% to 9% of children.
