The Division of Endocrinology and Diabetes at Children's National Health System is the largest endocrinology program in the mid-Atlantic region. When you entrust your child's care to our specialists, you can be assured that leading experts in the field are helping your child. We have one of the largest pediatric diabetes programs in the country. U.S. News & World Report also ranks our endocrinology program as one of the top 20 in the nation, reflecting our commitment to family-centered care.

The Importance of a Pediatric Expert

There is a reason that thousands of parents entrust their children to our care. Children's pediatric endocrinologists have the expertise to recognize, diagnose and treat these complex conditions. Our team also teaches you and your child how to manage chronic or long-term endocrine disorders, such as diabetes.

Conditions we treat include:

  • Adrenal disorders
  • All hormone disorders and diseases
  • Diabetes mellitus, type 1 and type 2
  • Short stature
  • Precocious and delayed puberty
  • Thyroid disorders

Division Specialists

Your child's visit doesn't end with the endocrinologist's diagnosis and recommendation. The following specialists - all dedicated to caring for your child and helping you - make up our multidisciplinary team:

  • Board-certified endocrinologists
  • Pediatric diabetes specialists
  • Registered nurses and nurse practitioners
  • Certified diabetes educators
  • Dietitian
  • Psychology services
  • Social work services

The Childhood and Adolescent Diabetes Program

The division's diabetes program uses a team approach to provide comprehensive care to children and teens with type 1 or type 2 diabetes and to patients with cystic fibrosis-related diabetes. The program focuses on education and teaching patients and their families how to cope with all aspects of diabetes and its management. The team includes diabetes nurse educators, a dietitian, clinical psychologists and a nurse who specializes in training patients and families in insulin pump therapy.

Polycystic Ovarian Service

Children's National Health System offers the only comprehensive Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) program for young girls and teens in the Washington, DC area. The Polycystic Ovarian service ensures young women have easy access to all of the necessary specialists in pediatric gynecology and nutrition to help them effectively manage PCOS.

The PCOS service is coordinated by renowned endocrinologists at Children's National and an obstetrician/gynecologist with expertise in pediatric gynecology who practices at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. This partnership allows us to monitor a young woman's reproductive health over time and during her transition to adult care. And as an adult, she has the option to see an obstetrician/gynecologist who knows her medical history.

Your child's doctor may refer your daughter to our team when PCOS is suspected or after the condition is confirmed. Our team can help with the diagnosis, treatment and coordination of related care, and we do not require a lab test from patients to come to see us.

Hours and Appointments

PCOS appointments can be scheduled for the second and fourth Tuesday of every month by calling 202-476-3440.
