Brain injuries that happen during episodes of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)—where the body converts fat instead of sugar into energy, and where the pancreas is unable to process insulin, such as in type 1 diabetes—are rare, and happen in less than 1 percent of DKA episodes, but these injuries can carry lasting consequences—including mild to severe neurological damage. 

The presence of psychiatric disorders should not be a contraindication to weight loss surgery for adolescents with severe obesity

Psychiatric disorders, a common comorbidity of severe obesity, especially for youth, should not disqualify an adolescent with severe obesity from bariatric surgery. According to a study published in Pediatrics, identifying anxiety, depressive disorders, ADHD, and eating disorders, while still a crucial pre-surgical evaluation step, had no predictive value for how much post-surgical weight loss an adolescent would achieve.

Researchers have successfully used facial analysis technology and clinical information to identify Williams-Beuren syndrome in diverse populations, according to an international study published in the May 2018 issue of the American Journal of Medical Genetics. The study, led by the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health, used objective digital facial analysis technology from the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation at Children’s National Health System.
