Kurt Newman, MD, Named to Becker’s Hospital Review 100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems

Washington, DC — Kurt Newman, MD, President and CEO of Children’s National Health System, has been named to the Becker’s Hospital Review 2015 edition of “100 Physician Leaders of Hospitals and Health Systems,” which includes healthcare leaders from some of the largest and most respected hospitals and health systems across the nation.

The list spotlights hospital and health system leaders' healthcare experience, accolades, and commitment to quality care. This is the fourth year in a row that Dr. Newman has been recognized.

“I’m honored to be included with so many distinguished colleagues from hospitals across the country,” Dr. Newman said. “This is a reflection of our entire organization and our focus on innovation in all aspects of care and research, while always striving to do the right thing for children and families.” 

Dr. Newman has been President and CEO of Children’s National since 2011 and has been an integral part of the Children’s National family for more than 30 years as a surgeon and a leader. He also played a key role in creating the Sheikh Zayed Institute for Pediatric Surgical Innovation, serving as Founding Vice President in 2009. Dr. Newman was also recently named to the Washington Business Journal’s 2015 Power 100 list as an innovator. 

A recognized expert in advancing pediatric healthcare quality and outcomes, Dr. Newman has consulted with several children's hospitals in conjunction with the Child Health Corporation of America. Before becoming CEO, he held prominent roles in several medical societies including serving as a Board Member of Commissioners of The Joint Commission, a member of the Board of Governors of the American Pediatric Surgical Association, and as Chair of the Surgery Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics. As CEO, Dr. Newman serves as the Chair of the Children’s Hospital Association Leadership Committee on Advocacy and Policy and as a member of the Board of Trustees. He is also Chair of the Board of Directors for the District of Columbia Hospital Association and is a member of the Commonwealth Council on Childhood Success in Virginia. In addition to his involvement in medical and healthcare associations, Dr. Newman is a Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at The George Washington University School of Medicine and has authored numerous scientific publications and books.
