Honoring Advocates for Their Service to Children

Washington, DC –  Children’s National Health System honored prominent local government officials, business executives, community leaders, and organizations  for their advocacy on behalf of children’s health, at a private event at the hospital  on December 7. The awards were given out during the Children’s National Annual Meeting and Celebration, an event recognizing the past year’s achievements, retiring and incoming board members, and other Children’s National friends.

The event also featured a keynote address by Muriel Bowser, Mayor of Washington, DC.  Mayor Bowser praised Children’s commitment to caring for the health and well-being of Washington, DC families. She spoke about partnering to create healthier communities and noted Children’s efforts to support the local economy, as a significant employer in the community.

The 2015 honorees include:

  • Chairman’s Special Award
  • For individuals or organizations who have provided exceptional service and support to Children’s National
    • DC Councilmember Yvette Alexander
    • Edmund Fleet, Executive Director of THEARC
    • Steven Knapp, PhD, President, The George Washington University
    • Catherine Merrill Williams, President & Publisher, Washingtonian Media
  • Friend of Children Award
  • For individuals and groups who provide exceptional service and support to children everywhere
    • George Stevens, Jr., and, posthumously, Michael Stevens of George Stevens Productions
    • For 33 years, George Stevens Productions produced Christmas in Washington in support of Children’s National.
  • Patient & Family Advisory Council (PFAC) Award
  • To a recipient chosen by the PFAC in recognition of professional and outstanding service to the children and families Children’s National serves
    • Elva Anderson, PhD, ATR, LPC, Health Educator and Art Therapist at Children’s National
  • Glass Bear Award
  • For special individuals for their dedication and service to children’s health
    • Washington, DC, Mayor Muriel Bowser

Also recognized were two Children’s National employees with 50 and 55 years of service, respectively, as well as a number of recently retired physicians long associated with the health system. 

The Annual Meeting and Celebration also serves to commemorate the date on which the hospital was first incorporated: December 5, 1870. The event brings together members of the Children’s National Health System governing boards, auxiliary boards, faculty, and management.
