Children's National Receives 2015 Computerworld Data+ Editors' Choice Award From IDG Enterprise

Washington, DC — The Business Intelligence and Analytics team at Children’s National Health System was recently named as a 2015 Computerworld Data+ Editors’ Choice Award honoree. This award recognizes innovative big data initiatives that have delivered significant business value.

They are taking data analytics to the next level – mining data to make fast business decisions, measure risk, create efficiencies and much more.”

Children’s National utilizes geospatial technology, combined with data mined from de-identified electronic health records, to inform clinical care decisions and understand what factors may be impacting a patient’s health outside the health system’s walls. 

Working with clinical staff, the geospatial analytics team has studied conditions such as childhood obesity, sickle cell disease, bronchiolitis and burns within the Washington, DC, region. In one project, the team was able to characterize the childhood obesity prevalence in the region and determine the associated factors contributing to this condition.  In another project, while tracking the geography of thermal burns across the region, the team identified geographical clusters where water heaters were being turned up too high. Once provided with this data, clinicians in the Department of Trauma and Burn Surgery led by Dr. Randall Burd were able to develop an education campaign targeting families within those neighborhoods.
