Washington, DC – For her contribution toward the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect, Allison Jackson, MD, MPH, was awarded the prestigious Administration on Children, Youth, and Families Commissioner’s Award at the National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect. This award is given to one person from each state for their significant work and leadership in helping prevent and treat child abuse and neglect.
Dr. Jackson is the Division Chief of the Freddie Mac Foundation Child and Adolescent Protection Center at Children’s National Health System. She is also an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. She has spent her career specializing in providing direct medical care to abused and neglected children and advocating on their behalf within human services, law enforcement, and other areas of the Washington, DC, public health system. She is on the Leadership Council of the District of Columbia’s Victim Assistance Network and represents the Ray Helfer Society on the National Coalition of Child Abuse. She has been a member of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Abuse and Neglect, is a team supervisor for the District of Columbia’s Multidisciplinary Team on Child Abuse and Neglect, and often gives trainings and presentation on child maltreatment to medical professionals and organizations in the metropolitan area, including the United State Attorney’s Office and the Metropolitan Police Department.
Washington, DC, continues to have a rate of child abuse that is twice the national average. Dr. Jackson and her team work with more than 1,300 children each year in the District of Columbia and surrounding areas, serving more than 500 children annually through their participation in the District of Columbia’s Multidisciplinary Team on Child Abuse. Dr. Jackson leads the only medical center in Washington, DC, with a team of healthcare professionals dedicated to work with maltreated children and adolescents.
“I’m humbled by this honor and want to recognize the dedication that each of my fellow awardees has exhibited in working to treat and prevent abuse and neglect,” said Dr. Jackson. “It’s through advocacy, education, and care that we can hope to help children that may find themselves being victimized.”
The National Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect is the only federally sponsored national conference devoted to child abuse and neglect. The meeting is held every two years and sponsored by the Children’s Bureau’s Office on Child Abuse and Neglect.
