Mark L. Batshaw honored with the Marion Kingsbury Award for Distinguished Service and Outstanding Achievement from The Kingsbury Center

WASHINGTON, DC—Children’s Physician-in-Chief Mark L. Batshaw, MD, was honored with the Marion Kingsbury Award for Distinguished Service and Outstanding Achievement from The Kingsbury Center during the Center’s 75th Anniversary Awards Gala. Dr. Batshaw was one of four award recipients, each of whom has made significant contributions in the field of learning and developmental differences.

“I am tremendously humbled by this prestigious recognition,” said Dr. Batshaw. “My research and clinical care focus in these areas was always driven by my desire to understand the unique challenges these children face and find better ways to help them. If we can understand the biology and genetics behind these challenges, perhaps we can think innovatively about new and different treatments to improve their lives. My enthusiasm was reinforced as my own family was touched directly by such a challenge.”

Dr. Batshaw, who is also the Children’s National Chief Academic Officer, is internationally known as an expert in the research and care of children with developmental disabilities and rare diseases. He is the author of the leading textbook on the subject, Children with Disabilities, and has published more than 200 articles and reviews about birth defects and developmental disabilities in journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine.

“Having known Mark personally for the last 15 years, I can attest to his personal and professional passion for his work with children who have developmental differences,” said Kurt D. Newman, MD, President and CEO of Children’s National, who introduced Dr. Batshaw at the gala. “His work has helped the field make tremendous strides and I am thrilled that the Kingsbury Center has chosen to honor him this evening.”

The awards were presented at the Kingsbury Center’s 75th Annual Awards Gala by event host and Master of Ceremonies Katie Couric. Other honorees included Congresswoman Julia Brownley (CA), Co-Chair, Congressional Dyslexia Caucus, Congressman William Cassidy (LA), Co-Chair, Co-Founder Congressional Dyslexia Caucus, and Debra Lee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of BET. The Kingsbury Center is a local non-profit education organization dedicated to providing a transformative educational and social experience for children and adults with learning differences.
