Kidney Transplant Program at Children’s National Recognized with Silver Award from HHS
October 16, 2012
Washington, DC – Children’s National Medical Center is among only nine children’s hospitals recently recognized by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) for its Kidney Transplantation program. The program received a Silver Level Award at a Medal of Honor Ceremony held at the Seventh National Learning Congress. Awards were granted by the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice. The programs were recognized based on their performance on post-transplant survival rates, transplant rates, and mortality rates after patients are placed on waiting lists.
Children’s National Kidney Transplant program was the only program in the mid-Atlantic region to be recognized at the Silver Level. “This award acknowledges a team that has taken the care model for kids with renal failure to a whole new level,” said Gerard Martin, MD, Senior Vice President, Center for Heart, Lung, and Kidney Disease and Co-Director of the Children’s National Heart Institute. “We are pleased to be recognized by HHS as one of only nine children’s hospitals in the country with an award-winning transplantation program.”
The Health Resources and Services Administration at HHS supports the Donation and Transplantation Community of Practice, which brings together donation and transplantation professionals, hospital staff, and other professionals involved in the donation process to identify and share best practices.
