Insurance
Health Insurance
Children's National Hospital provides employees an opportunity to participate in one of two types of health insurance plans: a PPO- Preferred Provider Option; or, an HMO- Health Maintenance Organization. Employees share a portion of the premium costs, and premiums are deducted on a pre-tax basis from an employee's pay. Coverage types are offered for employees and employees plus their families. Coverage is available the first of the month after the date of hire.
Plan Choices
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO): Participants in the Plan can choose to go to either the preferred providers or they may choose to go to any provider they choose outside the network.
High Deductible Plan with Health Savings Account (HSA): Uses a network of providers, just like the PPO plan, but the way to you pay for your care and prescription drugs is different.
Health Maintenance Organizations: Currently a couple HMO's are offered in addition to the Children's Health Plan as an option for health insurance coverage to Children’s staff and their families. The HMOs all contain dental coverage, vision coverage and prescription drug coverage.
The Transparency in Coverage Final Rules require certain group health plans to disclose on a public website information regarding in-network provider rates and historical out-of-network allowed amounts and billed charges for covered items and services in two separate machine-readable files (MRFs). The MRFs for the benefit package options under the Children’s National Health System Health and Welfare Benefit Plan are available here.

Long and Short Term Disability Insurance
A long-term disability plan is established to insure income protection of staff who become totally disabled for 90 days or more as a result of accident or illness, once accrued sick leave has been exhausted. The plan pays a percentage of the employee's regular monthly base salary according to staff position. The coverage is provided at no cost to eligible employees.
Children's offers you the option of purchasing short term disability insurance coverage through payroll deduction. The Plan is offered to help insure income protection of staff who become totally disabled for a period of 14 days to 89 days as a result of accident or illness. The plan pays a percentage of the employee’s regular monthly base salary as elected.
Additional Benefits
Retirement Plans
Children's National Hospital offers employees the opportunity to participate in the Children’s Affiliates' 401(k) Plan by making pre-tax contributions from their gross salary.
After meeting service requirements, Children's will make a 100 percent matching contribution, based on the employee's contribution, up to 5 percent of their gross salary. Employees also can withhold additional, but unmatched money, in the plans, up to the maximum allowed by the Internal Revenue Code.
Professional Growth
Children's National Hospital encourages and supports our employees' ongoing educational and development needs by providing an educational assistance program. After six months employment, you are eligible to apply for educational assistance.
Programs eligible for educational assistance include: undergraduate and graduate courses or programs which lead to a degree (other than the last available degree for that profession or program, such as a doctorate) and which directly relate to improving the performance of the employee in his/her current position.
Employee Assistance Program
Children's National Hospital provides an Employee Assistance Program (EAP), which provides the opportunity to talk confidentially with a behavioral health professional about a wide range of personal matters in a confidential manner.
Employees, their covered eligible family members or other members of their immediate household are encouraged to take advantage of this benefit when needed. There is no cost to employees or eligible members of their household for the initial assessment or short-term counseling services provided by the EAP.
Leave
Annual Leave
Eligible staff members accrue vacation based on the number of hours worked at Children's. Vacation is accrued per pay period, according to staff level, and years of service. The number of weeks accrued varies from 2 to 5 weeks per year.
Sick Leave
Sick leave benefits are provided to ensure income during periods when employees must be absent from work due to personal illness or injury. Eligible staff accrue sick leave up to a total of 12 days annually, based on the number of hours worked.
Paid Holidays
Children’s currently recognizes nine federal holidays as paid holidays. In addition, each benefit eligible employee receives an annual "floating holiday," added to their vacation accruals to use as they wish.
Parental Leave
It is the policy of Children’s National to offer 100 percent paid maternity, paternity, or adoption, leave for both men and women as they strive to balance their work with the challenging role of becoming parents, or as their families grow.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Children's National Hospital offers staff the opportunity to elect to participate in flexible spending account(s) (FSA). An FSA is a benefit established under Section 125 of the Internal Revenue Code designed to provide employees with the opportunity to pay for certain medical and dependent care expenses on a pre-tax basis.
Money deposited in your FSA is not subject to federal income and social security taxes and most state and local income taxes. In other words, the money is deposited on a pre-tax basis before taxes are withheld. As a result, this money is not treated as taxable income. The FSA, therefore, is a valuable benefit that helps you to increase your net income by reducing your federal and state income taxes.
The FSA plan includes a medical spending account for tax-free reimbursement of out-of-pocket medical, dental, vision, prescription expenses, and a dependent care spending account that can be used for tax-free reimbursement of eligible dependent care expenses. Coverage is available the first of the month after the date of hire.
Parking and Transportation
Parking is available at Children's National main hospital based on staff position and shift worked for a modest monthly fee. Reduced fee off-site parking is available to all staff at a nearby lot with shuttle service.
Shuttle Service
Children's National provides free shuttle bus service between the hospital and the Brookland Metro Station (Red Line) with extended hours. The shuttle runs regularly throughout the day and is free for employees, parents and visitors. It does not run on weekends or holidays. Children’s National also offers two reduced-fee, off-site parking lots with free shuttles that run regularly to the hospital.Other Benefits
