Message From Leadership

Read a message from the Child Neurology Residency leadership.

Each year, more than 25,000 pediatric patients benefit from the Neurology Department’s multidisciplinary care, from around the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area and the world. Children's National is a 323-bed free-standing children’s hospital with a dedicated 25 bed neurology floor including 17 video EEG beds, along with a 54-bed NICU and 35-bed PICU.

Inpatient care addresses a variety of conditions that require hospitalization, including epilepsy, brain tumors, metabolic and genetic disorders, infectious and inflammatory conditions of the central and peripheral nervous system along with other neurologic conditions. Our inpatient services are divided into four daytime teams: a Child Neurology Ward Team, Consult Team, a Neuro-Critical (PICU and CICU) Care Team and a Neonatal and Fetal Critical Care Team, each with unique attending physicians that are devoted to complex care and research pursuits within their area of interest.

In addition to its team of more than 40 neurologists, the division collaborates with colleagues in related divisions throughout Children’s National for a fully-integrated approach to care. For example, the multidisciplinary Epilepsy Surgery Program evaluates innovative drugs and offers the finest in neuro-monitoring and neurosurgical treatment of epilepsy. The team includes designated epileptologists, neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists and a variety of other members to coordinate complex care.

The Neurology Department at Children’s National has a variety of programs and services to help care for any child’s neurological needs. All children have access to the latest advances in neurology, with treatments based on our cutting-edge research and our commitment to providing age-appropriate, personalized care for each child.

How to Apply

We plan to match four categorical positions for the combined pediatrics and child neurology residency in the 2023-2024 Match.

  • All candidates applying to the categorical positions will be eligible to match to a five-year position in both the pediatrics and child neurology residencies at Children’s National Hospital. All applications for the four five-year positions are reviewed through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) by the Child Neurology and Pediatrics residency programs. You should apply to both the child neurology categorical track and pediatrics child neurology categorical track to be considered for the categorical position.
  •  If you are invited to interview, you will need to schedule one interview day with the Child Neurology Residency Program and one interview day with the Categorical Pediatrics Residency Program. Interviews will be available virtually; however, we plan to allow optional in-person second looks which we brought back in 2024. Program leadership will not be aware of who chooses to participate in a second look, making it truly optional. More information will follow.

Please submit your application to both of the following tracks for the 2024-2025 Match if interested in a categorical position:

  • Categorical Child Neurology Program – NRMP code 1070185C0.
  • Categorical Pediatrics Residency Program – NRMP code 1070185C0.

You must apply to the Children’s National Medical Center/George Washington University Program (Accreditation ID 1851021048).

Candidates must also plan to take steps I and II of the USMLE before beginning their residency. International Medical Graduates must have completed USMLE steps I and II prior to applying and must demonstrate that they have had significant exposure to medicine in the United States.

Eligible candidates will be invited for interviews by the departments of Pediatrics and Neurology.

You will receive more information about our interviews if invited.
