Pediatric Emergency Medicine Fellowship

The Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) Fellowship prepares physicians to be future leaders in the field of pediatric emergency medicine. The curriculum provides the skills to excel in clinical care, teaching, administration and research.

The Emergency Department has 55 part- and full-time faculty who are active in research and teaching. The ED receives over 125,000 visits per year. A second emergency department within a community hospital serves  the most medically under-resourced part of Washington, D.C. Children's National Emergency Department is a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center with active trauma services and an integrated Division of Transport Medicine. The Division has a vibrant research atmosphere that includes faculty working in disaster preparedness, quality improvement, advocacy, ultrasound, lab-based work, pre-hospital services, global health, data analytics and informatics and medical education. Many faculty conduct multi-institutional research through national research networks.

How to Apply

There are five fellows each year in the Pediatric Emergency Medicine fellowship. The program uses the ERAS system for applications. Visit the ERAS website to submit your application. Deadline for submission of all application materials (through ERAS) is August 20. The required documents for application are the minimum documents requested by ERAS, including three to four letters of recommendation, with one preferably from your residency program director.

This fellowship program considers applicants who are completing or who have completed a pediatrics or emergency medicine residency. Please note that PEM fellow candidates are required to provide backup call services as part of the PEM fellowship program. Candidates who are unable to provide both “moonlighting” and backup call activities/services will not be able to be considered.
