Inpatient Service

The inpatient unit has a high inpatient bed occupancy rate and is acknowledged as the leading source of inpatient care for adolescents in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. Adolescent Medicine fellows lead patient-centered rounds with the adolescent medicine attending as well as provide consultations to hospitalized adolescents on other services, including inpatient psychiatry. Admissions include any diagnosis in our primary care patients, as well as specialized care for eating disorders, gynecologic disorders, HIV and complex medical care co-management with surgical teams.

During this experience:

• Fellows have the opportunity to participate in other relevant activities at the Main Hospital during inpatient time, including:
  • Family meetings
  • Afternoon teaching
  • Case management oversight
  • Learner orientation and feedback sessions
• Fellows do not have any outpatient clinical responsibilities in the afternoons 
• Fellows should have an even distribution of inpatient coverage regardless of year in program
  • On average, this is twelve weeks and twelve weekends, including assigned holidays if there is a complement of four fellows total.
