Message from Our Vice-Chair for Medical Education

Dewesh AgrawalThe highest achievements and greatest rewards of our careers in academic medicine should be the people we train, for they are the future of our field. The educational mission of Children's National Hospital is to support the premier standard of excellence in caring for children by preparing pediatric caregivers, both within and beyond our walls, to practice outstanding pediatric medicine in the 21st century. We are incredibly blessed at Children’s National to have such diverse, passionate and talented physician trainees in our GME programs. Children’s National is committed to investing in the education of our residents and fellows. Just as the medicine we provide our patients should be evidence-based, we at Children’s National know that the education we provide our trainees should also be evidence-based. By fostering a community rich in collaboration, innovation, academic inquiry and mentorship, our renowned faculty in the Children’s Academy of Pediatric Educators (CAPE) and graduates of the Master Teacher Leadership Development Program advance the science of pediatric education so that our trainees can truly embrace the rewards of evidence-based education.

Children’s National is recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top 5 pediatric hospitals in the nation. In 2020, Children’s National celebrated its 150th anniversary – making it the fourth oldest children’s hospital in the country. Children’s National has a rich tradition of providing pioneering, quaternary care to an international referral base while at the same time serving as the safety-net medical center for the community of children in Washington, D.C. Graduates of our training programs are not only outstanding clinicians, but they also have the foundation to become leaders in their communities, whether in academic medicine, subspecialty care, community-based care or health policy.

Children’s National provides a nurturing yet challenging educational environment which allows GME trainees from diverse backgrounds to prepare themselves for incredible careers in pediatric medicine. We remain deeply committed to the individual well-being of each trainee and to excellence in world-class service to others through our core pillars of patient care, advocacy, research and education. Residents and fellows participate in the delivery of cutting-edge clinical care while engaging in innovative research in our state-of-the-art hospital, outpatient facilities and our Children's National Research Institute. Our faculty provides expert education and mentorship to train the next generation of pediatric experts and leaders.  Our GME programs are skillfully designed to provide our trainees with the fundamental knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to achieve proficiency, competency and mastery in both clinical practice and scholarly research.
