The Inherited and Polycystic Kidney Disease (IPKD) Program at Children's National Hospital provides integrated care for children with rare and inherited forms of kidney disease. The IPKD Program consists of a multidisciplinary team of clinicians, genetic counselors, and nutrition and psychology specialists to serve the unique needs of children with various forms of genetic kidney disease.

Our Services

The IPKD Program at Children's National provides comprehensive medical evaluation and management of genetic forms of kidney disease in children. Among our services are: 

  • Combined multidisciplinary appointments with kidney, liver, preventive cardiology, genetic counselors, and nutrition and psychology specialists
  • Ordering clinical genetic testing and interpreting the results
  • Pre- and post-genetic counseling for patients and families
  • Referrals to other specialists as needed for the personalized care and management of children with various forms of genetic kidney disease, such as urology and endocrinology
  • Introduction of rare kidney disease specific resources to patients and their families, for community involvement and outreach
  • Participation in national and international registries, as well as ongoing clinical trials, can be discussed with our team

Introduction to PKD

In this educational session pediatric nephrologist Ashima Gulati, M.D., Ph.D., provides an overview of PKD and its impact. Topics include the different forms of PKD, available treatments, and how to manage the disease.
