Balance and Vestibular Referral Guidelines

Our program may be helpful for providers with patients that are experiencing true vertigo symptoms, balance problems, reading difficulties, frequent falls and poor coordination.

Patients should be referred if they have:

  • Congenital malformations (hydrops, malformed semicircular canals, superior canal dehiscence, etc)
  • Genetic conditions (NF2, EVA, CANVAS Syndrome, etc)
  • Traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Autoimmune inner ear disorder
  • Ototoxicity (Aspirin and quinine, loop diuretics, aminoglycoside antibiotics, antineoplastic medications, environmental toxins (lead, mercury, etc)
  • Migraine-associated vertigo (vestibular migraine)
  • Persistent postural perceptual dizziness (CSD)
  • Benign positional proximal vertigo (BPPV)
  • Pre or post cochlear implant patients
  • Diabetes (with neuropathy)
