Research
During the Critical Care Medicine Fellowship, each fellow must complete at least one scholarly project that results in a peer-reviewed manuscript publication. Many opportunities are available to help fellows meet this expectation. The Division of Critical Care Medicine is active in both the Collaborative Pediatric Critical Care Research Network (CPCCRN) and Pediatric Acute Lung Injury and Sepsis Investigators (PALISI) networks. The Children’s National Research Institute provides a platform for collaborative research efforts with other subspecialties. In addition, research opportunities exist at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is nearby.
Good mentorship is the key to any successful research endeavor. Fellows will have an accomplished mentor assigned to serve as a resource as they develop their research question. Towards the end of the fellow's first year, they will begin having regularly scheduled meetings with the Scholarship Oversight Committee to monitor the progress of their project, provide additional guidance and ensure that their project will meet the American Board of Pediatrics requirements for successful board certification.
Additional components of our research training include:
- Fellow core curriculum in research/statistical concepts
- Quality improvement core curriculum training series with departmental QI project
- Evidence based medicine/journal club
- Opportunity to take courses at The George Washington University at minimal cost
