IMPACT DC - Improving Pediatric Asthma Care in the District of Columbia
IMPACT DC is an award-winning pediatric asthma program in Washington, D.C., dedicated to improving asthma care and outcomes for children through clinical care, education, research and advocacy.
Our mission is to lessen the need for emergency room visits and hospital stays by educating patients and families about ways to manage the condition and connecting them with valuable resources in their local community.
Our educational and medication management visits are often scheduled after an emergency department visit, hospitalization, or a referral from your child’s healthcare provider. During this one-time IMPACT DC visit, our goal is to help you better understand asthma and feel confident managing your child’s asthma. We provide personalized asthma education, review medications and answer any questions you may have. After the visit, we can help connect you with resources such as school health services, housing, food or environmental support. We also work closely with your child’s pediatrician or specialists to help coordinate any follow-up care your family may need.

Choosing Children's National for Asthma Care
IMPACT DC’s three focus areas: asthma care and education, outreach and research
The IMPACT DC Asthma Program is at the center of our program. We care for children who have been to the emergency room, been hospitalized for asthma, or are having trouble keeping their asthma under control.
At your visit, you and your child will meet with a team of asthma specialists, including asthma educators and clinicians. We will:
- Review your child’s asthma and answer your questions
- Create a personalized asthma care plan
- Work closely with your child’s primary care provider, school nurse and others involved in their care
Our asthma educators provide one-on-one teaching to help you and your child better understand asthma and how to manage it every day. We will show you how to use inhalers and other devices correctly and talk with you about common triggers—like allergies, smoke or pollution—and how to reduce them at home, school and in your community.
Conditions We Treat
Understanding your child's condition is an important step on your treatment journey. Our program focuses on the treatment of asthma, or consideration of asthma as a diagnosis in younger children.
