About the Provider

Michele Mietus-Snyder, MD, is a preventive cardiologist and clinical research scientist. Her interdisciplinary approach within the Center for Translational Research in the Children’s National Research Institute and the Children’s National Division of Cardiology, positions Dr. Mietus-Snyder to embrace proactive cardiovascular risk management for optimal cardiometabolic health promotion that is important to overall child health.

Clinically, Dr. Mietus-Snyder sees patients in the Preventive Cardiology Program and provides cardiology consultation to her medical colleagues in other divisions, including Endocrinology, Nephrology, Gastroenterology, Hematology and the IDEAL weight management program.

In community advocacy, she initiated a novel academic-community collaboration with D.C. Public Schools and George Washington University medical students in 2012, to bring a mentored-behavioral change model into district elementary and middle schools to strengthen local school wellness policy. This program is called Team Kid Power or KiPOW™ and is now in its 14th year in DC.. Public and Public Charter Schools. Medical student graduates of Team KiPOW have also established this program in Orange County, Southern California and New York inner-city school districts where they have gone on to pursue residency, fellowship training and academic pediatric practice.

In research, Dr. Mietus-Snyder has long fostered multi-site collaboration, advocating for child health promotion through the National Association of Children’s Hospitals’ Focus on a Fitter Future consortium. She took the lead within a collaborative of preventive cardiologists on a multi-site trial funded by the NIH Pediatric Heart Network on treatment of the dyslipidemia of overweight/obesity in teens (DO IT) and is currently participating in the dissemination of trial findings. She is co-investigator on long-standing bicoastal research with colleagues at the UC Benioff Children’s Hospitals and the USDA Nutritional Research Laboratory in Albany, CA, exploring the nutritional underpinnings of energy, metabolism and cardiovascular health – and new collaborative research protocols to better explore the mechanisms by which food is good medicine are underway.
