Children's National Health System Announces Newly Created Chief Real Estate and Facilities Officer Role

Washington, DC – Charles Weinstein, Esq., has been tapped as the new Children’s National Health System Executive Vice President, Chief Real Estate and Facilities Officer.

In this newly created function, Mr. Weinstein will play a critical role in Children’s research and innovation strategy and will ensure that the required infrastructure is developed to support Children’s ambitious vision for research, specifically, and for the entire health system, broadly. He also will play a pivotal role as Children’s initiates its planned expansion of its research and innovation enterprise, increases its clinical locations, and embarks on a master facilities program to improve the functionality of the main hospital campus and outpatient locations.

“Charles’ experience will help Children’s National strategically manage its real estate in order to support our health system priorities and will better enable our research advancements,” says Kurt Newman, MD, President and Chief Executive Officer of Children’s National.

Mr. Weinstein comes to Children’s National from Boston Children’s Hospital, the pediatric teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, where he served as the Chief Real Estate Officer and Vice President for Real Estate, Planning and Development since 2004. There, he conceived the strategic planning for and executed a $250 million annual capital budget, expansion of the organization’s inpatient facilities, ambulatory clinics and medical office locations and over 1.5 million square feet of basic research laboratory facilities. With his oversight, the hospital saw dramatic growth, expanding from 2.4 million square feet to more than 5.5 million square feet of owned or leased facilities.

Prior to Boston Children’s Hospital, Mr. Weinstein was the Director of Real Estate for The Johns Hopkins Hospital and Johns Hopkins University, where he reconstructed a 1940s clinical building into a state-of- the-art biomedical lab facility with office space and a technology data center, along with many other major redevelopment projects.
Mr. Weinstein is an experienced real estate professional with 40 years of progressive experience, and his clinical and research laboratory projects have garnered numerous national and local American Institute of Architects design awards. He has a Master of Liberal Arts from The Johns Hopkins University and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Maryland School of Law. He graduated from The Pennsylvania State University.
