Our Commitment to Diversity

As a children’s hospital, we believe that every child deserves the chance to grow up strong in mind and body. We are inspired by their hopes for their future and their limitless potential.

Our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion is critical to achieving our mission and a natural extension of our desire to help create the future all children and families deserve. Reflecting the rich diversity of our community and actively listening to different perspectives enhances innovation and creates a better experience for our patients, families and employees. Achieving this goal requires purposeful, relentless attention across multiple dimensions, including:

Ensuring respect for all: We expect all of our employees, patients, families and business partners to act respectfully toward one another, regardless of our differences. We address behaviors that do not support our goal of providing a welcoming, respectful environment for all.

Promoting workforce diversity, equity and inclusion: Through our hiring, promotion and training practices, we strive for a workplace culture that is diverse, equitable and inclusive.

Advancing health equity: Structural racism is responsible for significant health disparities for people of color. Disparities also exist related to gender identity and sexuality. Through research, community partnerships, advocacy and other interventions, we combat these serious public health threats.

Championing inclusive education: As a teaching hospital, we help shape the future of healthcare by supporting diversity across our medical, health science and research training programs.

Engaging our community: Through our extensive community-based initiatives – to our routine community needs assessments – we learn how to best support our communities. In collaboration with the community, we explore and co-create sustainable policy and system change solutions that promote equitable outcomes for all children. Community engagement extends beyond our programs and initiatives by informing the way we communicate, make-decisions and invest resources.

Supporting economic opportunities: We support our community by advancing an equitable economy through our purchases, contracts and partnerships.

In developing these programs, we recognize that we must overcome centuries of pervasive racism, sexism and cultural and religious bias that have created functional, economic and structural barriers. To break the self-perpetuating cycles of inequity, our solutions often require disrupting existing systems to achieve sustainable equity.
