Prom Night Makes Children’s National Hospital Patients’ Dreams Come True

Dunkin Prom in Healing Garden

More than 75 Children’s National patients attended prom in the hospital’s Bunny Mellon Healing Garden on May 24. Teen patients joyfully dressed up, danced, celebrated each other and had fun, like their classmates and friends. The Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation funded the celebration through the Dunkin’ Prom Program.

Mason, a longtime patient, took the lead at the DC101 DJ booth. He says his care team always made him feel important. The prom was a special night for every guest to feel that their happiness, talents and experiences were important, too. For these patients, being a teenager came first.

“I think it's a celebration of all we've been through,” said Nell, a patient and prom guest. “But it’s also a recognition that we can be normal teens.”

Once Upon a Prom, a local nonprofit, donated dresses and suits for patients to wear and keep. The teen shoppers were thrilled to sparkle with extra confidence.

“Just seeing the kids dancing and laughing again, it truly filled my cup,” says Angelica Bowman, team lead activity coordinator at Children’s National.

We’re grateful to the Dunkin’ Joy in Childhood Foundation, DJ Josh from iHeartMedia, Kona Ice, Turner Construction, Interstate, Once Upon a Prom and the Children’s National team members who made this a night to remember!
