Coronavirus Update:What patients and families need to know
Children's National Hospital is currently enrolling children in two COVID-related studies.
Long-Term COVID-19 Study
Children’s National is enrolling up to 2,000 children and young adults in a study that will examine the long-term effects of COVID-19 and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C).
The study is designed to enroll children and young adults under 21 years of age who have a confirmed history of symptomatic or asymptomatic SARS CoV-2 infection or MIS-C. Participants who enroll within 12 weeks of acute infection will attend study visits every three months for the first six months and then every six months for three years. Participants who enroll more than 12 weeks after acute infection will attend study visits every six months for three years. The study will also enroll household contacts to serve as a control group, and parents or guardians (one parent per participant) will complete targeted questionnaires.
Register Your Child for the Long-Term COVID Study ->
Researchers and physicians at Children’s National Hospital have started enrolling children younger than 12 to participate in clinical research trials to evaluate the Pfizer- BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. This trial is designed to determine how well the vaccine works in children as young as 6 months of age. We expect that enrollment for the trial will occur very quickly, around a few weeks. Please fill out the information form and if your child is eligible for this trial, we will contact you.
For this trial, parents must sign a consent form and bring their child in for the initial shots plus for follow up evaluations. The study includes obtaining blood specimens for COVID antibodies and nasal swabs over the course of approximately 6 months. This study is placebo controlled so some participants will be randomly assigned to receive placebo in place of actual vaccine. Six months after receiving the shots, the participants who received placebo will be given the opportunity to receive the actual vaccine. All the children will have some follow up for about 2 years after vaccination, but the visits will be much less.
Note that we may be able to offer children a chance to participate in future trials for COVID-19 vaccines or other studies, so if your child isn’t chosen for this study we may contact you for other trials.
