Pre-Surgical Tour

Children and families facing surgery may have a lot of questions. In an effort to answer these questions and prepare you for their upcoming surgery, Children’s National offers pre-surgical tours on select Sundays identified below.

The pre-surgical tour is intended to help children and caregivers familiarize themselves with the hospital, services and the surgical process by making the environment more comfortable, friendly and fun for you as you prepare for a child’s surgical experience.

The pre-surgical tour provides an opportunity for patients, families and siblings to:

  • Tour the Surgery Preparation and Recovery Center
  • Learn what to expect before and after surgery in a kid and family-friendly way
  • Touch and feel equipment
  • Ask questions along the way in order to ease any anxiety you may be feeling

Every tour is designed to provide the best possible experience for your child and family. Tour guides use language and methods that are easy for kids to understand as well as encourage participation along the way to ensure maximum comprehension. Knowing what to expect makes anesthesia, surgery and recovery less stressful for the entire family. A positive experience at the onset helps increase coping skills for future health care situations.

The tours, which take place on select Sundays at 2 p.m., end with refreshments and a question and answer period.

We highly recommend attending an in-person pre-surgical tour; however, there is also a video about having surgery at Children's National, presented in language that is easy for kids to understand.
