About the Provider
Diana Bharucha-Goebel, MD, is the director of the Muscular Dystrophy Association clinic at Children’s National Hospital in Washington D.C., where she is an associate professor in the Division of Pediatrics and Neurology at the George Washington School of Medicine and Health Science. She completed her medical training at Drexel University College of Medicine in 2007, followed by a General Pediatric Residency (2009), Child Neurology Residency (2012) and Neuromuscular Medicine Fellowship (2013) — all completed at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Following her clinical fellowship training, starting in 2013, she began research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md., and concurrently joined the Division of Neurology at Children’s National. Her research focuses on the development and implementation of early phase clinical viral mediated gene transfer trials for children affected by rare neuromuscular diseases. Her work has focused on the development of clinical outcome measures and biomarkers for a rare neurodegenerative disorder called giant axonal neuropathy (GAN). She has concurrently worked with senior investigators at NIH on the development of a first in human intrathecal gene transfer trial for GAN, which is underway. Her research currently focuses on studying the immunologic consequences and immune modulation following viral mediated gene transfer. Clinically, she leads an expert multidisciplinary team at Children’s National, which includes neuromuscular care coordinators as well as physical medicine and rehabilitation, genetics, pulmonology, cardiology, physical therapy, occupational therapy, nutrition, bone health, endocrinology, orthopedics and social work. She and the entire multidisciplinary neuromuscular team are providing newly approved novel therapies for children with neuromuscular disorders, and her team is utilizing their expertise to improve patient outcomes and standards of care for children with neuromuscular disease.
