About the Provider
Aisha Barber, MD, MEd, is the director of the pediatric residency program (2020-present) and former associate program director (2011-2017) at Children’s National in Washington, D.C. She is an attending physician in the division of hospital medicine and associate professor of pediatrics at Children’s National and George Washington University.
Dr. Barber earned a Bachelor of Arts at Rutgers University and MD at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School prior to completing pediatric residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She participated in Cohort 3 of the Academic Pediatrics Association’s Educational Scholars Program, the Children’s National/George Washington University Master Teacher Leadership Development Program and earned a Master's in Education at George Washington University.
Dr. Barber has led initiatives in simulation, assessment, resident well-being and health equity, where she enjoys mentoring and a team approach to curriculum design, goal setting, outcomes tracking and budget management.
In 2017, Dr. Barber paused many of her academic activities to care for her daughter, then an infant with special healthcare needs. During that time, she enjoyed serving the community in the urgent care setting. After returning to Children’s National, she had the privilege of serving on the Children’s National Virtual Patient Family Advisory Council, collaborating to explore the interconnectedness of patient and physician well-being and establishing meaningful patient-family feedback for pediatric residents.
Dr. Barber serves in multiple local and national administrative roles including on the Board of Directors for the Association of Pediatric Program Directors (APPD). In this role she serves the program leaders who in turn serve pediatric residents and subspecialty fellows seeking to improve the lives of children. Dr. Barber is also principal investigator for the Building Equity in Graduate Medical Education (BEING) Initiative at Children’s National, a philanthropically funded program to take a scholarly and multifaceted approach to equity in graduate medical education.
Central to Dr. Barber's world is her family. Her family’s current and historical experiences along with nearly 20 years of lessons from patients and trainees, drive her passion for training the healthcare workforce who cares for children.
