High reliability is the study of human performance in complex systems and includes: systems thinking, analysis of serious safety events, techniques to minimize the probability of errors, techniques to improve processes, and tactics to move organizations to a culture where patient safety is at the core of all activities. Many healthcare systems are adopting concepts used by high reliability organizations like aviation and nuclear power to meet production requirements while experiencing fewer than their fair share of accidents. This program will explore some of these concepts and how building a culture of reliability will lead to dramatic improvements in safety with the ultimate goal of reductions in preventable patient harm.
