Learning Objectives:

  • Identify IPV as a pediatric health issue
  • Recognize ways in which IPV power and control tactics may manifest in pediatric healthcare settings
  • Describe appropriate response when IPV power and control tactics are suspected or identified

Childhood exposure to intimate partner violence (IPV) is highly prevalent and associated with lifelong negative health and psychosocial outcomes. Pediatric healthcare providers have unique opportunities to connect families to IPV resources. It is critical that IPV screening and intervention utilize best practices to ensure safety for children and families as IPV help-seeking associated with risk for escalated violence, including intimate partner homicide. This presentation will help providers better understand how abusers may use pediatric healthcare settings to exert power and control tactics, as well as how to identify and respond when this occurs.
