Exercise, omics, and the pediatric origins of health: Not just for kids anymore

Dan Cooper, M.D., discusses new approaches to understanding physiologic responses to exercise in children. This grand rounds will illuminate discoveries in the emerging field of pediatric exercise medicine. We will review: 1) new approaches to understanding physiologic responses to exercise in children; and 2) the interaction between molecular transducers of growth and molecular transducers of exercise. We will focus on functional and genomic responses of circulating leukocytes to exercise, and how these responses influence a variety of pediatric diseases. Advances in pediatric exercise medicine and science will ultimately enable child health professionals, families, and community leaders to optimize the use of exercise to promote health during a critical period of growth.
