Washington, DC — Paramjit T. Joshi, MD, Division Chief of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Children’s National Health System, will be recognized by the Indo-American Psychiatric Association (IAPA) with the 2015 Outstanding Academician award.
Dr. Joshi is being honored for her exemplary research work, outstanding clinical care, and dedication to the IAPA. The award will be presented at the 2015 Annual Meeting for the Indo-American Psychiatric Association in May 2015 in Toronto.

Packer, MD, Senior Vice President of the Center for Neuroscience and Behavioral Medicine at Children’s National. “Dr. Joshi is a leading national voice on mental health care, and this is a much-deserved recognition of a career dedicated to improving children’s mental health everywhere.”
Dr. Joshi joined Children’s National in 1999 and is an Endowed Professor and Division Chief of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Children’s National, and Professor of Psychiatry, Behavioral Sciences & Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. After graduating from the Christian Medical College in Ludhiana, India, Dr. Joshi first trained and practiced as a pediatrician before later specializing in child and adolescent psychiatry.
During the past 25 years, Dr. Joshi has developed expertise in the psychological effects on children of trauma, crisis, and violence. Dr. Joshi has also consulted internationally in developing research and outreach programs to train and build capacity for mental health services in war-torn countries such as Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iraq, and Eritrea. She is currently consulting to the children’s hospital in Tokyo, assigned by the Japanese government to develop a response program for children affected by natural and man-made disasters. Closer to home, Dr. Joshi has been a leading voice on the relationship between mental health conditions and gun violence.
Dr. Joshi is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP) and a member of the American College of Psychiatrists (ACP). She is currently on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Psychiatry & Neurology (ABPN) and the President of AACAP.
IAPA provides a forum for psychiatrists of Asian-Indian origin to consolidate professional identity, develop skills in addressing the bicultural mental health needs of the Indo-American community, establish a network for the exchange of information, obtain mentorship in fulfilling professional aspirations in the larger psychiatric community of North America, and leave a legacy for subsequent generations of Indo-American mental health professionals.
