HIV Prevention and Treatment Program

Contact number | 202-476-2519

The Washington, D.C., metropolitan area is a recognized “hot spot” of the national HIV epidemic. Children and adolescents are included in this epidemic.

The Children’s National HIV Prevention and Treatment Program, within the Division of Infectious Diseases, has been around since the early 1980s and has consistently received funding support from the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program, named for an American teenager who contracted HIV from a blood treatment in the 1980s. We provide clinical and support services to the majority of infants, children, adolescents and young adults at risk for — and living with — HIV in the metropolitan D.C. area including suburban Maryland and Virginia.

Our mission is to:

  • Prevent HIV in our community
  • Diagnose HIV in children and adolescents as soon as possible after infection
  • Provide optimal care for those living with HIV and their caregivers and families

Our team works in close partnership with primary care community providers and specialists from multiple divisions at Children's National to provide comprehensive care for patients and support for their caregivers and families.

Children’s National is the lead pediatric and adolescent agency for the D.C. network of specialized HIV healthcare providers. Our partners include the regional departments of health, diverse youth health programs, area hospitals, D.C. school nursing program and an array of community-based organizations.
