Many of the patients seen by the Pediatric Colorectal & Pelvic Reconstruction team require testing performed by our collaborating partners. Information about some of the most common tests our patients undergo include:

• Urodynamics Testing: The Urodynamics team collaborates with programs and divisions throughout Children's National Hospital to provide the best care to your child. In addition to working with our Spina Bifida Program, their specialists work with colorectal experts and are informed by guidance of the Spina Bifida Association. • Anorectal Manometry: This test measures the movements or motility of the rectum and anal canal in an effort to determine if any difficulty in pooping is related to issues with the functioning of the anorectal muscles. An anorectal manometry study is usually done when there is difficulty in bowel movements or soiling. It can be used to determine if any underlying neuromuscular condition could be present. It is also helpful in children who have had operations for anorectal malformations such as the imperforate anus or Hirschsprung’s disease.
• Colonic Manometry: This test helps to assess the function of the large intestine or colon, a colonic manometry test can directly record the pressure waves. This is done by placing a thin plastic tube or probe with pressure sensors through the rectum and into the colon during a colonoscopy by your gastroenterologist or sometimes by a radiologist, who guides it in using fluoroscopy or video X-ray study.
