High Accuracy Software System Detects Renal Obstruction and Minimizes Radiation-Based Imaging


Researchers at Children's National Hospital have developed a software system to assess congenital kidney obstruction and predict clinical outcomes, reducing unnecessary invasive imaging procedures and misdiagnosis.


The dilation of kidney and renal structures overfilled with urine caused by obstruction is common in babies and in few adults. Most renal obstructions resolve without treatment, however they require periodic studies to ensure proper kidney functioning. Patients with obstruction typically undergo procedures that involve catheters, harmful radioactive tracer materials and sedation in children. This technology minimizes the risks associated with the use of radiation and sedation by using the fewest possible nuclear imaging procedure to predict a patient’s condition. The following advantages highlight the merits of this software system:

  1. Quantitative renal assessment compared to subjective evaluation to minimize misdiagnosis.
  2. Reduction in harmful radiation exposure and sedation by minimizing number of imaging procedures.
  3. Reduction in patient discomfort and costs associated with additional procedures.
  4. Software system provides greater than 90% predictive accuracy, specificity and sensitivity.
  5. Earlier diagnosis of renal obstruction to preserve kidney function.
