Device and Software System to Assess and Manage Treatment for Inflammatory Bowel Syndrome


Researchers at Children's National Hospital have developed an objective computer-aided diagnostic and decision support system to detect, characterize and monitor inflammatory bowel diseases. This system analyzes MRI and other diagnostic images to overcome subjective bias, improve accuracy of disease diagnosis and plan the course of treatment required for a patient.


Evaluation of inflammatory bowel disease is based on clinical symptoms which are generally subjective and may involve invasive procedures, such as colonoscopy with biopsy. The use of non-invasive procedures such as MR Enterography enables physicians to non-invasively evaluate pediatric and adult patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease. However, the interpretation of MR Enterography is challenging and imprecise without quantitative analysis of multimodal imaging biomarkers. The following are the advantages offered by this treatment management and assessment system:

  1. Reduces subjective physician bias in disease diagnosis and evaluation.
  2. Quantification of peristaltic activity.
  3. Longitudinal follow-up to assess disease progression and response.
  4. Easy to use and adaptable with existing systems.
