Rheumatic Heart Disease – Global Health

Prevention and Early Detection of Rheumatic Heart Disease
Craig Sable, M.D., works within a large international collaborative group on research projects aimed at reducing the global burden of rheumatic heart disease (RHD).
In addition, foundation funding supports the following work:
- Examining the impact of handheld echocardiography on decentralization of cardiac care in low-resource settings (Uganda)
- Improving the feasibility of echocardiographic screening for RHD through task-shifting and use of ultra-portable devices (Uganda)
- Understanding the epidemiology of Group A streptococcal infections in sub-Saharan Africa
Additionally, a new grant from the Edwards Lifesciences Foundation has launched a research study in Brazil to examine the ability to integrate screening for heart valve disease into the primary healthcare structure of the country.
