The Children's National Research Institute

Fun, Interactive and Portable Videogame-based Ankle Rehabilitation Robot

Video game robot

Summary

Researchers at Children's National Hospital have created videogame-based portable residential-use and clinical-use ankle robotic rehabilitation devices designed to activate and strengthen foot and ankle muscles, as well as increase range of motion, dexterity and gait in patients with ankle weakness.

Description

Physical therapy for neuromuscular disorders such as cerebral palsy involves frequent visits with the Physical Therapist which can be physically and financially challenging to patients. Robotic devices offer promising and alternative therapy options. The engaging and entertaining video game ankle rehab robot is especially suitable for pediatric patients and has the following advantages:

  1. Three degrees of freedom to promote ankle flexibility and strength in all axes.
  2. Adaptable modes of motion: active and tele-therapy.
  3. User-friendly and game-based robotic therapy promotes compliance with therapy.
  4. Portable model allows in-home and the larger model allows for clinical use.
  5. Positive feedback from initial clinical trial users.
  6. Video game and device easily controlled with app on a mobile device.
  7. Mobile app allows on-site or remote patient access.

Applications

  • Ankle rehabilitation for pediatric patients with neuromuscular disorders (cerebral palsy)
  • Ankle rehabilitation for the geriatric patients

Stage of Development

  • Preliminary clinical trials performed for proof-of-concept. Other clinical studies ongoing.

Intellectual Property Status

  • Pending PCT Patent application, “Robotically Assisted Ankle Rehabilitation Systems, Apparatuses and Methods Thereof”
