Confidence‐Based Robotic Surgery

Confidence based robot

Summary

Researchers at Children's National Hospital and University of Maryland have developed a Robotic Assisted Surgery software system that can detect, diagnose and complete a surgical task by recommending autonomous versus manual tasks and smoothly transitioning between the two.

Description

The advantages offered by Robotic Assisted Surgery (RAS) include improved precision, repeatability and patient outcomes (quicker recovery times and shorter hospital stays), and reduced human inaccuracies. While autonomous surgeries still remain elusive, allowing surgeons to control and switch between manual and autonomous control would offer a collaborative strategy with the robot, which can further improve surgical efficiency and precision, and reduce fatigue. The newly developed “self-aware” RAS system makes the decision process easier for surgeons by detecting and recommending a particular task with high confidence levels (based on the algorithm) thereby maximizing automation and minimizing human errors. The following are some of the advantages of this system:

  1. Increased precision of complex surgical procedures
  2. Maximized level of automation
  3. Reduced risk as the semi-autonomous tasks are still delegated to surgeons
  4. Shorter duration of surgery/procedure
  5. Improved cutting accuracy
  6. Quicker recovery time

  • Laparoscopic surgery
