Mentorship through the D.C. Chapter of the AAP

Our residency program works closely with the D.C. chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics to organize workshops and individual mentor/mentee pairings to help residents with career planning.

Big Sib/Little Sib Program

After Match Day, our new interns will be assigned a resident “big sib.” This resident reaches out to the new interns, trying to help answer any questions that arise on moving to the area and preparing for residency. Once residency begins, they still serve as a mentor, helping interns as they learn their way around the hospital and each new rotation.

Chief Families

Since 2013, the intern classes have been divided into four “chief families” in order to help ease the transition into residency. One chief resident is assigned to be the chief mentor for 10 of the interns, helping them navigate their new environments in and out of the hospital. Chief Residents try to meet socially with their resident families four times a year, checking in with each on their personal and professional adjustments to residency.

Formal Mentoring

Children's National believes that a mentor/mentee relationship is a crucial part of personal and career development. Throughout their clinical time at Children's National, our residents find many mentors in various stages of their career. However, there are many areas where a formal mentor will be assigned. Each resident will be assigned a portfolio adviser that meets with them twice yearly (at minimum) to discuss their progress, the individualized learning plan, and makes sure the program is meeting their needs. In addition to this mentor, residents will be paired with faculty to help with their REACH projects, QI projects and fellowship applications.
