Washington, DC – Children’s National Medical Center announced the appointment of Lawrence C. Dr. Mahan will play a critical role at Children’s National by identifying and developing long-term initiatives that advance scientific projects and secure strategic partnerships and business opportunities for the center. The Sheikh Zayed Institute is working to make pediatric surgery more precise, less invasive, and pain free. The institute is organized around the intentional innovation model of discovery, which treats innovation as a discipline to be systematically pursued in organized, collaborative ways.
In his position with the Office of Innovation and Investigational Therapeutics, Dr. Mahan will be responsible for management of intellectual property initiatives, strategic business development opportunities, and advancement of academic entrepreneurship.
“The Sheikh Zayed Institute is assembling an impressive team of national research leaders from diverse fields,” Mahan said. “I am looking forward to helping them carry their ideas from the lab to clinics worldwide. Progress in research is often hindered by inadequate funding, resources, technology, and coordination, but the institute brings it all together, providing a structure and unparalleled opportunity to accelerate discovery. I’ll make sure they have the support they need to be successful.”
Dr. Mahan is a proven, experienced professional in national and international business development, strategic alliances, and planning in the bioscience industry. He has experience in advanced technology initiatives development and government relations. He is an accomplished senior scientist, who holds four U.S. patents and has more than 25 years experience in basic medical research, including 12 years service in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Before joining Children’s National, Dr. Mahan held a dual appointment of Director of Programs & Operations at the Maryland Biotechnology Center and Business Development Liaison in the Office of Research and Development at the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute. He holds a doctorate in physiology and pharmacology from Physiology and Pharmacology, University of California School of Medicine in San Diego.
Kurt Newman, MD, senior vice president for the Joseph E. Robert, Jr., Center for Surgical Care, said, “We are pleased to welcome Larry on board, and look forward to his contributions to the Sheikh Zayed Institute as well as Children’s Research Institute. Larry’s experience in all sectors of advanced technology development and strategic business development make him a perfect fit for our growing organization. I am excited to see the progress we’ve made in a very short time, and look forward to the opportunities Larry can cultivate for us in the future.”
Made possible by a $150 million gift from the Government of Abu Dhabi, the Sheikh Zayed Institute combines unparalleled innovation and team science to revolutionize four key areas: pain medicine, immunology, bioengineering, and personalized medicine. While other institutions are pursuing new developments in these areas, the Institute is the first to bring these areas together in an effort to best inform research and clinical practice, with a focus on pediatric surgery.
The Office of Innovation and Investigational Therapeutics was established in 2008 with the mission to facilitate translation of biomedical discoveries into innovative products that improve the health and well being of children. Since its inception, the office has worked with several investigators at Children’s National and their outside collaborators, stakeholders, and sponsors to advance product development.
