The adverse childhood experiences study pioneered the research that has shown the profound effect of childhood traumatic events on health and well-being. There is now a growing understanding within health systems and amongst clinicians regarding the urgent need to translate the science of childhood trauma and adversity into pediatric health care practice. We will review the link between trauma and health, discuss the ideals and practicality of a trauma informed approach, and highlight ongoing trauma and adversity related initiatives at Children's National Hospital.
