Precision prevention of child maltreatment

The Agitated Patient: Part IV - Precision Prevention of Child Maltreatment

Presented by,
Dyann Daley, MD
Executive Director, The Center for Prevention of Child Maltreatment, Cook Children’s Healthcare System
Fort Worth, TX

At the core of our society’s most heartbreaking and expensive health and social problems are early childhood adversity, child maltreatment, and social norms supporting violence.

Prevention of adverse outcomes must begin with those most vulnerable to the pathophysiology of toxic stress: infants and children age 0-3 years old. Utilizing Risk Terrain Modeling (Rutgers), a spatial risk analysis approach which diagnoses geographic attractors of hazardous behaviors, Cook Children’s has been able to accurately forecast where child maltreatment will occur in the future and rank targets for contextual risk mitigation.

Pediatric hospital systems are uniquely positioned to lead cross-sector strategy to address infrastructure misalignment, monitor objective measures of population health and well-being, and organize community-wide efforts to change social norms.

Learning Objectives
Attendees of this session will be able to:

  1. Describe deficiencies in professional education on ACEs and the pathophysiology of early childhood adversity
  2. Explain the difference between place-based and person-based predictive risk analysis
  3. Identify opportunities for the use of consumer analytics in contextual risk mitigation
