What patients and families need to know
Identifying the unknown before it becomes a pandemic
This week's Grand Rounds speaker and Holbrook Lecturer is Jonna A.K. Mazet, DVM, MPVM, Ph.D. She is a professor of epidemiology & disease ecology at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, and executive director at One Health Institute.
We live in an era when the threats posed by epidemics are greater than at any other point in history, yet the world remains unprepared. Trends indicate that diseases will continue to emerge, driven by growing populations, expanded travel and trade networks, and human encroachment into new habitat. Recent developments in technology and infrastructure have illustrated that the time is right for a shift in the way we think about and diagnose viral infections. Together, we can proactively develop prevention plans to mitigate the risk of new viral threats, as well as enable diagnoses at the source of viral spillover.
