The convergence of three major trends in medicine, namely conversion to electronic health records, prioritization of translational research, and the need to control health care expenditures, has created unprecedented interest and opportunities to develop systems that improve care while reducing costs. However, operationalizing a ‘learning health system’ requires systematic changes that have not yet been widely demonstrated in clinical practice.

This presentation will share details of a pilot program entitled ‘Learn From Every Patient’ that was designed to fully integrate research, quality improvement, and clinical care, including insights gained from this program, and discuss opportunities for expansion of such programs into larger learning health systems.

Learning Objectives:
Attendees of this session will be able to:

  1. Identify the major trends and barriers to the integration of clinical care and research
  2. Evaluate the results of a pilot program that includes key components of a learning health system
  3. Describe the cultural and operational changes that will likely be needed as health care institutions transition toward learning health systems
