Patients who have a history of trauma or violence in their homes or communities are at higher risk for experiencing agitated or aggressive behaviors in many settings, including the healthcare environment. How systems interact with patients and families at all encounters can impact how trauma-exposed patients engage in their care and respond to stressful situations.
This presentation will discuss this evidence, and review the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA)’s framework for implementing a Trauma-Informed Approach to care at a systems level.
Attendees of this session will be able to:
- Describe the impact that a history of trauma can have on behavior and health outcomes
- Recognize the importance and essential components of a Trauma-Informed Approach to care in healthcare settings
- Identify opportunities to implement a Trauma-Informed Approach to care
