Addressing Domestic Safety Concerns in a Pediatric Hospital

According to a 2010 CDC report, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men have been victims of some form of physical violence by an intimate partner within their lifetime. DC is in top 5 in nation for child maltreatment (neglect, medical neglect, physical abuse, sexual abuse, psychological abuse). Come learn about the role you can play in protecting our patients, colleagues, neighbors and families.

Jenny Brody is a co-founder of the DC Volunteer Lawyers Project, an organization providing legal services to domestic violence victims and at-risk children. Ms. Brody has practiced family law in DC for more than ten years, including serving as a member of the DC Superior Court’s Counsel for Child Abuse and Neglect Attorney Panel. She previously worked as an attorney in the United States Department of Justice, Civil Appellate Staff and in private practice. Ms. Brody earned her J.D. from Harvard Law School.

Attendees of this session will be able to:

  1. Describe the effects of intimate partner violence on children and families.
  2. Learn how victims become trapped in a “cycle of abuse.”
  3. Identify factors which are predictive of severe or lethal intimate partner violence.
  4. Determine obligations as mandatory reporters with regard to children exposed to violence.
  5. Be aware of legal and social services resources available to victims of intimate partner violence.
  6. Outline the legal framework applicable to intimate partner violence, including as it relates to children exposed to violence.
